Non-functional detail
Mentioning a random object or fact that carries no practical or emotional benefit for the article.
"A potential cement supplier entered the office. His tired look and worn-out suit symbolized the financial difficulties his company had faced this quarter. The conversation immediately got down to business."
"A man of indeterminate age entered the room, wearing a frayed brown jacket whose buttons hung by a thread. He sat on the edge of the chair, rubbed the bridge of his nose for a long time as if trying to remember something, and then suddenly asked: — Do you happen to know where they sold those sweet poppy seed buns on the corner?"
Meaninglessness that cannot be generated
If you ask a language model to add "living details", it will insert something that works for the atmosphere or the plot. Every detail in a machine serves a function: a worn-out suit must "symbolize difficulties."
Buttons hanging by a thread and a sudden question about poppy seed buns at a business meeting mean absolutely nothing. They don't move the story about cement supplies forward. This information is completely meaningless and leaves the reader bewildered. That is exactly why it is alive. It made it into the text simply because the author saw it in reality. A machine will never generate ontological noise without a purpose.
